These items were worn by Willie at one of his speeches for a graduation ceremony. He gave them to me in 2005 but I’m not sure which university they are from. He signed both the cap and the gown for me and there probably aren’t many of these in existence. Willie signed with the New York Giants out of high school in 1950, so never got the chance to go to college, though he did receive honorary degrees from Yale, Dartmouth, Ohio State and San Francisco State. The Giant’s Community Fund honors the hall of famer with a namesake Willie Mays Scholars program that annually provides academic scholarships to underrepresented youth in San Francisco.
